Touring with his brothers from the age of 13, Damian struck out on his own with solo albums that showcased a gift for blending dancehall, reggae and hip-hop styles and earned him his first Grammy for Best Reggae Album.
It was his third album and hit single Welcome to Jamrock that really crossed over to audiences worldwide, with Rolling Stone and The New York Times picking the track as one of their top songs of the decade. The only reggae artist to win in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance category at the Grammy Awards, Damian’s lyrics proved to be a provocative commentary on poverty, politics, crime and prejudice in Jamaica.
Further critically acclaimed collaborations have followed, with Nas for 2010’s Distant Relatives, with Mick Jagger and Dave Stewart in the band SuperHeavy and most recently with Skrillex on Make it bun dem.
