One of the UK’s most innovative young drummers and producers, Yussef Dayes is also undoubtedly one of the leading lights in jazz right now.

Over the last decade, south-east London has reinvigorated the UK jazz scene with seismic waves of young talent, many of whom have been celebrated at Summer Series. Back in 2016, Yussef’s duo with Henry Wu as Yussef Kamaal announced itself on the Black Focus album, with dancefloor sensibilities and funk-infused breakbeats at the heart of one of the most heralded jazz records of recent times. The duo went on to win the 2017 Jazz FM award for Best Breakthrough Act.

Yussef’s solo work since has revealed an additional breadth and scope. He soundtracked and curated the Louis Vuitton show for Paris Men’s Fashion Week in January 2019, collaborating with Virgil Abloh and Benji B, while his 2020 joint album with Tom Misch, What Kinda Music, came out on the legendary Blue Note label.

With a solo album on the horizon, it’s the perfect moment for a Summer Series Saturday session, showcasing Yussef’s uncompromising choice of sounds, and collaborations from a host of very special guests. Expect to be transported by what will be a remarkable rapturous live experience.

Channel One Sound System
Since 1979, selectors Mikey Dread and MC Ras Kayleb (aka Chanel One) have been one of the UK’s best known and most loved reggae sound systems, playing a unique selection of conscious reggae, exclusive dubplates and uplifting steppas.  Their hand-built sound system provides a rich, heavyweight bass sound, which complements their legendary selection of classic and contemporary roots music.

Special Guest - Children of Zeus
This special soul project combines two of Manchester’s most respected artists, Konny Kon and Tyler Daley. DJ, MC and beatmaker Kon is best known as one third of Broke’N’English alongside fellow Mancunians DRS and Strategy, while Daley, aka Hoodman, has gone from being a respected MC and actor to one of the most in demand UK soul singers of recent times, lending his vocals and writing credits to tracks from Goldie, LSB, Soul II Soul‘s Caron Wheeler, Lenzman, Lisa Mafia and Bugsy Malone.

Children of Zeus have been serving up a slice of much-needed soul food via releases on First Word Records and Soundcloud that continue Manchester’s rich musical legacy.
