Fashion has a waste problem, and we want no part of it!

Join Artist and Curator Georgina Johnson and Designer Benny Andallo for a workshop centred around re-loving the clothes we own.

Create less waste and textile pollution by swapping garments, repairing those that need some extra care or transforming an item into something entirely new. This is one of the most sustainable and ethically reparative things you can do.

The aim of these workshops is to extend the life-cycle of the clothes we already own. It is estimated that on average 40% of clothing sitting in wardrobes around the globe are never worn and that an item is usually worn just 10 times before it is thrown out. This contributes to the 360,000 tonnes of clothing that ends up in landfills each year.

What do we think happens when our clothes are thrown out?

Here are some stats for you:
40% of clothing ‘donations’ end up going straight back to landfills
60% of discarded clothing is exported from the Global North to the Global South
Ghana: it is estimated that they receive 15 Millions pieces of clothing weekly
Tanzania: takes in 540 Million pieces of second-hand clothing per year

Exported textile waste often ends up littering shorelines, polluting waterways, being burned because of the rate of exportation or simply cannot be worn as they are unsuited to the climate of the countries they are exported to.

Join Georgina and Benny for a fun day of cutting, sewing and making, that’ll help you regain a sense of appreciation and love for what you already have!

For everyone irrespective of skill level
We particularly want to encourage an intergenerational exchange
We will provide scissors, embroidery thread, hand needles and support
Machine technicians will be on site to aid with any projects

What to bring:
An item to swap, repair or transform
Great energy

Please be aware that these workshops are 2.5hrs each so be realistic with what you feel you will be able to do in that time. Come with an idea but be willing to be flexible with it.
