Way back in 2007, The Good, The Bad & The Queen’s heartfelt tribute to London was described by The Observer as, “One of the most surprising and magical records for which Damon Albarn has ever been responsible.” Their eponymous debut traced a remarkable journey from the English music hall tradition to West Africa and Afrobeat, zigzagging through the West Indies and its reggae and dub, then heading back to England to take in London's punk scene and ultimately Britpop.
Fast forward 12 years and the four musical storytellers are back with the critically acclaimed Merrie Land. Produced by Tony Visconti and written as the UK is preparing to leave the EU, Merrie Land is a reluctant goodbye letter, a series of observations and reflections on Britishness.
Could there be a more perfect band, with their creative symbiosis of pasts, present and shared musical histories, to untangle the competing optimism, disorientation and confusion in the atmosphere today? This is mood music on an epic scale.
