Growing up, Nao sought out London’s groundbreaking underground music scene, staying up late listening to the music her brothers played — pioneering garage-grime groups like Pay As U Go and Heartless Crew - but it was legendary soul voices like Nina Simone and Donny Hathaway that inspired her to swap open mic sessions for studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
She supported her time there as a backing singer for the likes of Kwabs and was soon the go-to vocalist for a range of electronic producers. Discovering Burial, James Blake and Mount Kimbie, Nao finally found the in-road to making her own tracks where “The dark meets the garage...”
Fast forward a year or two and she’s played to a packed-out crowd at Glastonbury, picked up a MOBO nomination for Best Newcomer and a Brit nomination for Best British Female Solo Artist, co-penning songs with JUNGLE, A. K. and her oldest partner-in-crime, Loxe.
Nao’s latest album Saturn offers dancehall-flavoured bangers and slinky, pitch-black R&B tracks, with her remarkable high register voice more assured than ever. Ready to tell honest stories her own way and celebrate new possibilities, these songs will have you hugging your friends and singing along – good luck with those high notes.
