Our pre-teen protagonist (Thomas Turgoose) growing up in the Midlands during the early 1980s, enters into a world of skinheads and rudegirls.
At first, he enjoys a sense of camaraderie and independence with his surrogate family of skinheads and rudegirls, but expectations are upturned when the racist ideology that underpins the gang emerges, forcing him to take sides and make sense of a situation he doesn’t fully understand.
Drawing upon classics such as The 400 Blows, Kes and Stand By Me, Meadows’ film captures the exuberance and agony of being young, but complicates things further by adding race to the already volatile, experiential mix.
Meadows' film brilliantly evokes its period setting, proving so popular that it continued the story of its characters in a series of Channel 4 dramas. Stephen Graham, Vicky McClure and Jack O’Connell are just some of the cast members who went on to become major stars.
Zakia Sewell (NTS) will set the mood with a live DJ set from 19.00.
