Certificate 15
Duration 108 mins
Direct from the Sundance and Cannes film festivals, this bold, funny and infectiously upbeat coming-of-age crowd-pleaser introduces you to a very different sort of superhero - Patricia Dombrowski, a New Jersey girl who dreams of becoming superstar rapper ‘Killa P’. Despite being held back by her mother - whose own musical aspirations have long since been shelved - and her soul-crushing job at the local bar, the self-styled Killa is determined that her voice will be heard, enlisting faithful sidekick Jheri and mysterious goth-metal noisemaker Basterd to help her create tracks that even the haters can’t ignore.
We’re thrilled that Bridget and Geremy will be joining us at Summer Screen for a formidably full-on Closing Night that may literally bring down the house.
Director Geremy Jasper’s debut feature film hits all the right notes, combining humour and heart with a gritty realism that never lets you forget just how high the stakes are for these characters. Most important, however, are the performances of newcomer Danielle MacDonald as Patricia and force-of-nature cabaret star (and Amy Schumer collaborator) Bridget Everett as her mother, who bring so much energy and emotion to their roles that the big-screen can barely contain it.
