In a creative climate in which technology is often subject to suspicion, evangelism or nostalgia, Alan’s technologically articulate practice seeks to confront the tricky world of high-end digital imagery head on. Through his work – which includes digital images, CGI films, AR and VR experiences, critical writing and video essays - he instigates an investigation into what it is that software does, how it both shapes and is shaped by culture.  His work explores the spectacular uses of technology as well as speculating on radical alternatives.

Alan will be using his time at Somerset House to develop new films, installations and virtual reality experiences, maintaining an interest in how technologies encode social, political and aesthetic biases into their architecture.

"Despite seeming like a natural fit, contemporary art and CGI technology remain at odds with one another. Defying this categorisation is interdisciplinary artist, animator and conceptualist, Alan Warburton, whose artwork and critical insight on cutting edge software technology is building an astute commentary on art, motion graphic design and contemporary culture."
