Christine Sun Kim: Flag Commission

To coincide with Christine Sun Kim’s Edges of Sign Language exhibition in Gallery 31, the multidisciplinary artist presents a specially designed flag, titled A Song About Family – an emblem of family co-creation and her time spent in residence.

Flying above Somerset House’s South Wing for the remaining duration of Edges of Sign Language, Kim’s flag commission was conceived and completed during her three-month residency at Somerset House Studios. The design originates from Kim’s recent publication DRAW A BLANK – DRAW BLANK, a book containing a collection of 54 musical staves, each populated by her peers and family. Her daughter Roux’s contribution was the score now seen raised above Somerset House’s courtyard, filled with musical notes, symbols and titled A Song About Family.

Roux’s score, already resembling a flag in a slight breeze, serves as a gentler approach to the often determinate designs and associations of flags, but also stands as a personal emblem for Kim’s family during their residence in London. A Song About Family is reflective of their shared art practice, the beauty and challenge of family co-creation, and of their support for fellow artist families.

Christine Sun Kim is an American artist based in Berlin. Kim’s practice considers how sound operates in society, deconstructing the politics of sound and exploring how oral languages operate as social currency. Musical notation, written language, infographics, American Sign Language (ASL), the use of the body, and strategically deployed humour are all recurring elements in her practice. Working across drawing, performance, video and large scale murals, Kim explores her relationship to spoken languages, to her built and social environments, and to the world at large. Kim’s work has been extensively exhibited and performed internationally. She is represented by François Ghebaly Gallery in Los Angeles and White Space Beijing.
