Photo London 2023 Talks | Thu 11 May

Providing you with unique insight into some of the world’s most exciting voices in medium, the Talks Programme features leading photographers, curators, writers and critics to discuss the photographic medium and its significance in the contemporary art world today.  

Talk tickets cost £9.50, these can be booked via the Somerset House website. Nikon talks are free of charge however booking in advance is strongly advised. 

Talk tickets do not include admission to the Fair. You must purchase a Day Pass ticket alongside your Talk ticket for the same day as the talk is taking place. Talks start promptly in The Screening Room at the scheduled time please arrive five minutes before the talk starts to avoid disappointment.

Aperture presents: Martin Parr in conversation with Lesley Martin
Photo London’s spotlighted photographer for the 2023 edition of the fair, Martin Parr, will discuss his well-known interest in the photobook—from his ever-expanding personal collection of photobooks, to the book form as a vehicle for his own photographs. Parr will present a few of his classic monographs, including The Cost of Living, Common Sense, Life’s a Beach, and Death by Selfie, before a conversation with Aperture’s creative director Lesley Martin about his role as a champion of the photobook as an autonomous art form.

Aperture presents: Artist-Led London with Ben Goulder, Gareth McConnell, and Amber Pinkerton. Moderated by Lillian Wilkie
In a challenging economic climate, London’s artists are forging new models for the production and distribution of photography. In this panel, Ben Goulder, publisher and director of New Dimension; Gareth McConnell, artist and director of Sorika; and Amber Pinkerton, photographer and founder of JA Editorial Archive, discuss navigating an insecure funding landscape and a lack of access to space, in order to develop projects rooted in community solidarity and collective joy. Moderated by Lillian Wilkie.

Aperture presents: Artist Conversation with Joy Gregory and Alona Pardo
In advance of a groundbreaking publication recognizing the output of Black women photographers in 1980s and ’90s Britain, edited by Joy Gregory, Gregory is joined by Alona Pardo to discuss the strong relationship between Black photographers in the UK and the US.

Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant presents Lynsey Addario in conversation with Fiona Shields
American photojournalist Lynsey Addario focuses on conflicts and human rights issues, especially the role of women in traditional societies. In this special talk, she'll discuss her work with the Head of Photography at the Guardian Fiona Shields as well as the importance of supporting young photojournalists.
