About the artist
Ana Vaz (1986, Brasília) is an artist and filmmaker working with film as an instrument. Composed as film-poems, her films walk along territories and events haunted by the ever-lasting impacts of internal and external forms of colonialism and their imprint on land, human and other-than-human forms of life. Expansions or consequences of her films, her practice may also be embodied in writing, critical pedagogy, installations, film programs or ephemeral events.
Her films have been screened and discussed in film festivals, seminars and institutions such as the Tate Modern, Berlinale - Forum Expanded, Palais de Tokyo, Jeu de Paume, LUX Moving Images, NYFF, IFFR, TIFF Wavelengths, BFI, Cinéma du Réel, CPH:DOX, Flaherty Seminar, Courtisane, TABAKALERA and Doc's Kingdom. Recent exhibitions include: 12th Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions (Tokyo, Japan), 36th Panorama of Brazilian Art “Sertão” at MAM – Museum of Modern Art (São Paulo, Brazil), “Meta-Archive 1964-1985: Space for Listening and Reading on the Histories of the Military Dictatorship in Brazil” at Sesc-Belenzinho (São Paulo, Brazil), “Eco-Visionaries” at the Royal Academy (London, UK) and MAAT (Lisbon, Portugal), “Ana Vaz: Profundidad de Campo” at Matadero (Madrid), “The Voyage Out” at LUX Moving Images (London), “Ecologies of Darkness” at SAVVY Contemporary (Berlin). She is a recipient of the Sundance Film Institute Nonfiction Grant (2019), Film Society of Lincoln Center Kazuko Trust Award (2015) and grand prizes at Punto de Vista Film Festival (2020), 25FPS (2020), Cinéma du Réel (2016), Media City Film Festival (2015), Fronteira Experimental and Documentary Film Festival (2015). Her films integrate the collections of CNAP (Centre National des Arts Plastiques) and Kadist (American Collection).
Ana is also a founding member of the collective COYOTE an indisciplinary group working across ecology and political science through an array of conceptual and experiential forms.
