Studio Spaces

Somerset House Studios is housed in the New Wing at Somerset House, a Grade 1 listed building which remodelled the old Admiralty residencies to create new offices for the Inland Revenue in the mid-nineteenth century.

The Studios uphold this heritage in their refurbishment, offering affordable workspace for artists across a range of studio and desk spaces. Most studios are shared, with a small number available for solo occupation. Access is 24 hour but subject to a security notification process for late working. All residents also have access to a number of shared social spaces for meetings, eating and socialising. This includes access to the Snooker Rooms, a unique space refurbished from the old Inland Revenues recreation spaces housing a kitchen, pool table, darts boards, screening and DJ facilities and a full sized snooker table. As a heritage building, the spaces vary, and the images linked above are representational of the type of space available. Please note the price relates to the size of the space, with the largest being the most expensive.

MID BASEMENT STUDIOS

The mid-basement contains a range of self-contained and shared studios which are carpeted spaces most suited to artists who primarily work at a desk. The space benefits from original features and is in close proximity to the snooker rooms, the residents social space.

Access: There is level access to the mid-basement via lifts within the building from ground floor level, although the corridor is not fully step-free. Accessibility requirements or adaptations can be reviewed as needed and will be based on individual’s needs

VAULTS

The vaults are contained flexible spaces located in the basement of the new wing, with an upper and lower studio available in each vault. Vaults are unfurnished and available as shared or solo occupancy. Each vault floor has a sink and spaces are suitable for messy work.

VAULT STUDIO – 25% SHARE VAULT FLOOR: FROM £190.00 EX VAT

Max capacity: 12 residents per Vault, 6 residents per floor.

Access: There is level access to Maker Street via lifts within the building from ground floor level, however there is a single step into each Vault. Accessibility requirements or adaptations can be reviewed as needed and will be based on individual’s needs.

STUDIO 53

Located in the basement of the new wing, studio 53 contains four lockable booth studio spaces suitable for artists who require a securable fixed setup, and a large studio suitable for large groups or collectives.

Max capacity: 1 resident per booth / 15 resident capacity for large studio

SOMERSET HOUSE STUDIOS

All studios residents have access to shared kitchen points / break out areas where fridges and hot and cold /drinking water is provided. Fridges are permitted in studio spaces, however freezers, toasters, sandwich makers and kettles are not. Hot works are not permitted in studio spaces due to the listed nature of the building. Lockable storage is available to all residents in shared studios.

Please note Residents have 24-hour access to studios and all prices include services, heating, electricity, internet and cleaning. Solo studios are offered as unfurnished spaces, but residents who opt for a desk in a shared studio are provided with the desk and chair.
