Future Artists Programme: Building Worlds for Play with Nick Murray

Building Worlds for Play with Nick Murray is a collaborative artist development programme for underrepresented creatives ages 16-25 who are eager to explore their creative potential in game making. Throughout the programme, you will be led by established artists, exploring the expansive world of interactive media and storytelling.

The programme is divided into two chapters of four workshops (one for ages 16-18 and one for ages 19-25) followed by a 2-day Game Development Weekend where creatives from both chapters will come together to create games that will be shown at Somerset House’s 25th Birthday weekend on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September 2025.

Led by award-winning producer, game-maker, and artist Nick Murray, along with guest facilitators, Building Worlds for Play is an introduction to the world of innovative game-design, interactive media, and storytelling. You will learn the basics of digital game-making, tabletop game design, build confidence, develop creative skills and play!

Who will be leading this programme?

Each Future Artists Programme is delivered by a different artist who shares their distinct practice. This makes each programme unique and means that no two programmes are the same. The Future Artists Programme - May 2025 will be led by award winning game-maker, Nick Murray.

Nick Murray is a game-maker, producer and composer making interactive sonic and narrative work focusing on loss and digital cultures. This often takes the form of games, interactive poetry and performance. Recently they’ve been tracing the tributaries of the River Brent and making games that explore the nature of communal archiving in the changing landscape.

From 2018-2025 Nick was lead producer for Now Play This, a festival of experimental game design and playful arts at Somerset House. In 2023 Nick was selected as part of Film London’s Lodestars cohort, celebrating innovative film and game-makers across the capital.  From September 2024 Nick is the ACAVA resident artist at Barham Park.

What will I be doing on the Programme?

Chapters 1 and 2

Week 1: Playing Week - It All Flows Somewhere

Introduction to the programme before exploring It All Flows Somewhere, a place-making game that combines physical mark-making with storytelling to build a fictional community. Opportunities to play and demonstration of translating a physical game to digital.

Week 2: Making Week - Flatgame Jam

Using the format of an enhanced game jam participants will be given free rein over a variety of physical materials to make a new game. Drawing on the starting points and mechanics from the previous session, participants will be invited to create and construct as they’re inspired to, with regular advice and guidance from the workshop facilitators in the room.

Week 3: Tabletop Week - Tabletop Role-Playing Games

TTRP looks at physical games through a selection of tabletop oneshots. Think Dungeons & Dragons but less rules-heavy, shorter and more narrative driven experiences. After playing some modern tabletop games participants will be invited to create new tabletop roleplay games with moments for testing mechanics with each other.

Week 4: Making Week - Downpour

Using the mobile-ready game-making tool Downpour, participants will explore the Somerset House site and create games that investigate the history and architecture of Somerset House.

Chapter 3

Game Development Weekend:

A further development opportunity, taking place over an intensive weekend packed with workshops and opportunities to explore and play different game formats. All participants will come together to explore formats developed during the earlier sessions and make original games to be shown at the Somerset House Birthday Weekend. The two days will be divided into making and testing sessions with opportunities to play each other’s games and provide constructive feedback in a supportive environment.

In addition to taking part in the programme, you will have exclusive access to wider Upgrade Yourself programming including the Upgrade Yourself Festival and Monthly sessions.

What experience do I need?

This programme is for motivated individuals with an interest in interdisciplinary arts, game design, collaborative practice and playful arts. You should be happy to work collaboratively, contribute to creative discussions, open to trying new things with a desire to explore your own creative process. We don’t ask for any prior experience, but when applying, it’s important that you can demonstrate an interest in games (whether that’s digital, physical, tabletop, theatrical or any other style of playful arts) and exploring creativity through game-making.

Who can apply?

This opportunity is for young people ages 16-25 who have an interest in interdisciplinary arts, game design, collaborative practice and play and are excited by the opportunity to gve their work a public platform. This programme will prioritise people from underrepresented backgrounds*.

Please note, it is important that you can attend all 4 bi-weely sessions of the programme and the weekend intensive in person. Applicants must be able to travel to Somerset House in Central London. Please look at the ‘what does attendance cost’ tab below for details about travel expenses.

*The Inclusive Talent Engagement team at Somerset House acknowledges that particular people are underrepresented in the creative sector. Particularly those who identify as:

  • Ethnically diverse and/or Global Majority
  • Living with a disability
  • Working class and/or from a lower socio-economic background**
  • LGBTQIA+ and/or non-binary

We also acknowledge that people face barriers in many ways not mentioned above, including:

  • Affected by a long-term health condition or impairment .
  • Affected by homelessness .
  • Care-leaver/carer .
  • Unemployed and/or have received welfare benefits .
  • Migrant or refugee status

**Fair access to working in the arts remains one of the most urgent issues facing the sector today, with those from lower socio-economic backgrounds still vastly underrepresented amongst the artists and employees of UK theatres, festivals, galleries and arts organisations of all kinds. Our team has drawn from Jerwood Arts’ ‘SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN THE ARTS A TOOLKIT FOR EMPLOYERS’ to define how to determine who falls into this category. We acknowledge this needs work and often, things aren’t always black and white, for now this is the framework we are using to determine this;

Some questions that might help define lower socio-economic background:

  1. Type of school attended at age 11-16
  2. Were you eligible for Free School Meals (FSM)
  3. Did your parents go to university?
  4. Parents occupation when you were aged 14
  5. Did your parents receive income benefits for a long period?
  6. Were your parents unemployed either for long periods of time or intermittently?
Why should I apply?

Building Worlds for Play with Nick Murray offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with like-minded, underrepresented young creatives and explore your artistic potential in the exciting field of game making. If you’re unsure if this programme is for you, ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I at the start of my creative journey and interested in learning the fundamentals of game design, interactive media, and storytelling through hands-on workshops?
  • Am I open to collaborating with other young creatives and developing my teamwork and communication skills?
  • Am I looking to build my creative confidence and explore new artistic ideas and practices?
  • Would I like to pursue art as a career path or study a creative course at college/university?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, it’s likely that this is the programme for you – we'd encourage you to apply and would love to hear from you!

If you answered no to all questions or are already studying or have studied game-design or inter-disciplinary practice at a degree level, it’s unlikely that you’d benefit the most from this programme.

What does attendance cost?

Taking part in the programme is free of charge to participants. Reasonable travel expenses of up to £10 per session will be covered and refreshments will be provided. These are the ways that we can support your travel to and from Somerset House:
